This week I have been focused on finding a better direction for my research proposal and my project. I think much progress have been made in the former, leading me to investigate lighting and computer visual effects’ impact on the well-being of people who live in confined spaces that lack natural light.

As I think about this topic, a few terms and vocabulary come across my mind regularly, and I am putting them down here as a note for myself. Circadian rhythm, ceiling light vs. lamp, gradual change in light intensity vs. on/off switch, light color temperature, dark mode on computer/mobile devices, mindfulness, and breathing. Take circadian rhythm for example, I know that it is about the 24-hour cycle a person goes through each day, with fluctuations on alertness and sleepiness. But I need to dive deeper and become more knowledgable on these subjects. What’s natural light’s role in regulating one’s circadian rhythm? How soon can one adapt to a one rhythm after jet lag or switching day shifts to night shifts? Are drivers more likely to run into accidents if they drive while they are supposed to be sleeping? Reading about these terms is part of my plan of this project.

Some inspirations I found this week included a series of still camera capturing the minute, yet noticeable changes in nature, such as leaves falling, trees swaying, and streams flowing. The artist is called AnasAbdin. Finding the characteristics of the animated sceneries and articulating why they are relaxing is one of my main goals.

In terms of techniques, one sunrise shader I found changes the position, light intensity, and color of the sun. And my next step is to learn from it and implement a similar transition in my own scene.
